Botter Apartment

It didn’t take too long for Art Nouveau Movement of 1890s to become popular in all aspects through Levanter and foreigners in Istanbul. Of course, the apartment that a designer (Jean Botter) made the popular architect (Raimondo D’Aronco) built on the most famous street of Pera would be the most distinguished example of this trend.

Casa Botter; although this structure is known as an apartment, was a house-office constituent that a single family spent their all private and business lives. J.Botter is a tailor who migrated to Istanbul at the end of XIXth century. He’s become so much popular in upper circles of Istanbul, become so popular in Ottoman and became so rich.  According to some rumours, he is Sultan Abdulhamit’s private tailor. 
In the beginning of 1900s, decides to continue in a fashion occupational activities of which are institutionalised just like the examples of it in the West and found a suitable lot, chose an experienced and skilled architect. 
The chosen lot is a field which is next to Swedish Embassy, heading backwards from the street with a definite angle, rather narrow and longish. The structure is built in an “adjacent order”. It has seven floors, on vertical fragmentation façade layout successfully reflects the daily life phases of Botter family.  
The large store with high ceiling, mezzanine, on the ground floor which  emerged as the entrance has been given to right side, also which is does not fall short of its counterparts in Paris is the “prestige” place of Botter Fashion House. On the first floor, in the large saloon on the front, master tailor admits the guests; rooms at back are separated for the helpers in light order. As for the upper floors, six-membered Botter family spends their private lives, maintains their socio-cultural activities. On the whole façade layout, architect M’Aronco demonstrates how close he keeps a watch on “Vienna Secession”. Curved small balcony on the first floor, other smaller balconies on the upper floors, all the iron rails of terrace and dense plant titivations that fill the surface; are as high-qualified as to easily be ranked among the most dignified examples of Secession outside of Vienna. The thing that such experienced structure, iron and masonry masters who can produce such elaborately qualified outputs (although some of them came from foreign countries) were found at that times’ Istanbul; that they could create such a masterpiece in cooperation also bring the case utterly different dimensions.

The building on Beyoğlu Meşrutiyet Street on the Rumelia side of Istanbul Bosporus is built by Alexandre Vallauri in 1896. It was projected and built for French colony which had become an important group in civil life in Istanbul till the end of 19th century.
Passage Oriental
Facing Beyoğlu Tünel İstiklal Street on Rumelia side of Istanbul Strait, it was built in 1840. It connects Passage Oriental İstiklal Street to Asmalı Mescit Avenue. This passage became firstly with Lebon and then Markiz Pastries. Both of these pastries were the best of the time. There was no better than them in terms of both decoration and service.
